Some watches are bought for a reason. Others become the reason. The two-tone Datejust is the second kind, and ref. 126233 is its current form: 36 mm of Oystersteel and yellow gold, a fluted gold bezel, and a choice of Jubilee or Oyster bracelet1,8.
It is also a watch that looks almost exactly like its grandfather, which is either the highest compliment in watchmaking or a business model. With Rolex it is usually both. What follows is what changed, what didn't, what it costs and how to tell a real one from the rest.
Seventy-three years of the same idea
The Datejust arrived in 1945, for Rolex's fortieth anniversary, as ref. 446724,25. By Rolex's own account it was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial24,26. The Jubilee bracelet was created for the launch24,27.
The fluted bezel is older still. Rolex presented it on the Oyster in 1926, when the flutes were there to screw the bezel down and keep the water out5. Today it does no such work. It catches the light, and that turns out to be enough.
In 1953 came the Cyclops lens25,28, which magnifies the date two and a half times15,25. In 1977 calibre 3035 gave the Datejust a quickset date, so the date could be set on its own with the crown25,29. In 1988 calibre 3135 arrived with ref. 16233, and sapphire became standard12,30.
The 116233 followed in the mid-2000s with solid end links, solid centre links and broader polished lugs13,14. The 126233 replaced it in 20182,13. Seventy-three years after the first one, the formula is the same: date window, lens, fluted bezel, Jubilee. Most of what has moved on is out of sight.
What changed in 2018
From the outside, very little. The lugs and case sides were redesigned to look slimmer and more tapered, and the bezel became slightly thinner6,9. The Jubilee traded the 116233's hidden Crownclasp for an Oysterclasp with the 5 mm Easylink extension, so both bracelets now share the same clasp8,14.
The real news is inside. Calibre 3235 replaced the 31353,6. It runs at 28,800 vibrations an hour with Rolex's Chronergy escapement and a blue Parachrom hairspring, and it holds about 70 hours of power reserve, against roughly 48 for the 31351,12,31. In practice: take it off on Friday evening and it is still running on Monday morning.
Rolex certifies it as a Superlative Chronometer, to within two seconds a day either way after casing1,6. Rolex redefined that standard in 201532. The Chronergy escapement dates from the same year33.
Twelve dials, two bracelets
Rolex lists the 126233 in 24 variants: twelve dials, each on a Jubilee or an Oyster bracelet8. Seven dials are plain: champagne, slate, bright black, two whites and two olive greens. Five are set with diamonds: champagne, bright black, olive green, silver and white mother-of-pearl8.
The bracelet changes the price. In the US the Oyster versions with a plain dial cost USD 15,150 and the Jubilee versions USD 15,900. With diamonds the range runs from USD 17,250 to USD 18,7508.
On the wrist it is 36 mm with 20 mm between the lugs3,8. If that sounds small, the Datejust also comes in 41 mm3,34. Which one suits you is a question of wrist, not of status.
What it costs
On 14 October 2026 Rolex's recommended price for the 126233 on a Jubilee with a plain dial was USD 15,900 in the US, GBP 13,300 in the UK and EUR 15,350 in Germany1,10,11. Twelve months earlier it was USD 14,400, GBP 12,250 and EUR 14,30035,36,37. That is a rise of 10.4, 8.6 and 7.3 per cent. The 2025 euro figure comes from Rolex's German-language site, which did not name a country.
Second-hand, we can only measure asking prices. The median asking price on the first page of Chrono24 listings rose from USD 14,999 in March 2025 to USD 17,499 in February 2026, about 16.7 per cent17,18. Over a similar stretch Rolex's own US price went from USD 13,700 to USD 15,500, about 13.1 per cent19,20. Asking prices are not sale prices, and that first page mixes new and used watches and diamond dials, so read it as a direction, not a valuation.
Buying one second-hand
Rolex's position is simple: buy from a jeweller in Rolex's own retail network, which Rolex says guarantees authenticity38. Away from the retailer, the checks above are the minimum. Match the bracelet and clasp to the reference, look at the date through the lens, find the crown in the crystal and watch the seconds hand sweep.
Nobody can tell you how rare a 126233 is. Rolex publishes no production figures, for the company or for any model. The only numbers are analyst estimates: Morgan Stanley and LuxeConsult estimate that Rolex sold about 1.15 million watches in 202522, and say their figures were not provided by the brands21. That estimate covers every model, and none of it is broken down by reference.
The dubious part
The two-tone Datejust is the watch for a man who wants gold but would like to be able to deny it. It never works. Everyone can see the bezel.
