Rolex Cosmograph Daytona: every generation, from the 6239 to the 126500LN

For its first twenty-five years the Daytona was the Rolex nobody queued for. It has made up for it since.

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is Rolex's chronograph for motor racing, made since 19631,18. It has had four generations of movement: hand-wound calibres based on the Valjoux 72 until 1987 or 1988, the Zenith-based calibre 4030 from 1988, Rolex's own calibre 4130 from 2000 and calibre 4131 from 20231,2,3,4. The case grew from about 37 mm to 40 mm in 1988 and has stayed there1,3,10. The current steel model, the 126500LN, listed at USD 16,900 in the US, GBP 14,050 in the UK and EUR 16,200 in Germany on 16 October 202610,19,20.

Four generations, told apart by the movement: hand-wound until 1987 or 1988, the Zenith-based 4030 until 2000, Rolex's own 4130 until 2023 and the 4131 since1,2,3,4.

The steel line since 2000: the 116520 with an engraved steel bezel (2000–2016), the 116500LN with black ceramic (2016–2023) and the 126500LN with ceramic edged in steel (2023–)4,5,21,22. Whether the 116500LN replaced the 116520 or joined it depends on whom you ask6,9.

Pre-owned, the older steel models ask more than a new one lists for. In February 2026 the median on Chrono24's first page was USD 23,346 for the 116520 and USD 30,405 for the 116500LN, against USD 16,900 for a new 126500LN17,23,24. Asking prices are not sale prices.

The references

Sixty years, four movements

Rolex launched the Cosmograph in 1963 with the ref. 6239, a hand-wound chronograph with its tachymetric scale engraved on the bezel rather than printed on the dial1,2,3. The earliest dials did not say «Daytona» at all, and an early advert called the watch the «Le Mans»1,2. Rolex says that in the early years «Daytona» appeared on some dials intended for the American market, and that the marking gradually became the norm4.

Wikipedia counts four generations, introduced in 1963, 1988, 2000 and 2023, and the movement marks each join: Valjoux-based hand-wound calibres, then the Zenith-based calibre 4030, then Rolex's own calibres 4130 and 41311,2,3,4. We have reference pages for three Daytona references: the 116520, the 116500LN and the white-gold 116519.

The hand-wound Daytonas, 1963 to 1988

The first generation is a small family of four-digit references that differ mainly in the pushers and the bezel, and from about 1970 in the calibre2,3. The 6239 had pump pushers and an engraved metal bezel. The 6240 of 1965 brought screw-down pushers and a black insert in the bezel, and «Oyster» joined «Cosmograph» on the dial2,3,4. The 6241 paired pump pushers with the black bezel; about 3,000 were made, according to Monochrome and Robb Report2,11.

Around 1970 calibre 722 gave way to calibre 727, still based on the Valjoux 72 but beating faster, at 21,600 vibrations an hour2,3,12. The 6262, with a metal bezel, and the 6264, with a black one, kept pump pushers and were made for one to three years, by source2,3,11. The 6263, black bezel, and the 6265, metal bezel, went back to screw-down pushers and stayed in the catalogue until 1987 or 1988, depending on the source2,3,11,12.

None of this sold especially well. Wikipedia says the original Daytonas were not in demand when made, and Monochrome calls the «exotic» dials now linked to Paul Newman «horrible sellers»1,2. Newman's own 6239, a gift from Joanne Woodward, sold at Phillips in New York on 26 October 2017 for USD 17,752,500 including premium13,14,25.

The Zenith Daytona, 1988 to 2000

In 1988 the Daytona became automatic. The 16520 used calibre 4030, Zenith's El Primero movement extensively modified by Rolex: slowed from 36,000 to 28,800 vibrations an hour, stripped of its date and good for about 54 hours of power reserve1,2,3,4. The case grew to 40 mm and gained a sapphire crystal1,2,3, and Monochrome notes that the black acrylic bezel was dropped2.

Gold and two-tone versions now had their own reference numbers, among them the 16523 in steel and gold and the 16528 in yellow gold2,3. Two came on leather, the yellow-gold 16518 and the white-gold 165191,3. Monochrome calls the 16520 the model that finally made the Daytona popular2.

The in-house Daytonas, 2000 to 2023

In March 2000, at Baselworld, Rolex launched calibre 4130, a chronograph movement it designed and made itself, with a column wheel, a vertical clutch and about 72 hours of power reserve2,3,4. The steel model was the 1165201,5. From the front, the quickest tell is the small seconds, which moved from 9 o'clock to 61,5.

Ceramic reached the Daytona in gold and platinum first: the Everose 116515LN in 2011 and the platinum 116506 in 20132,3,21. In March 2016 the steel Daytona got a black Cerachrom bezel, and the 116500LN was born21,26.

Gray & Sons, aBlogtoWatch and Luxury of Watches say it replaced the 1165206,7,8. At Baselworld 2016, though, SJX reported Rolex's line that the ceramic model was an addition and the 116520 would continue9. Every source we found ends the 116520 in 20165,27,28.

In 2017 Rolex offered the Daytona in yellow, white and Everose gold on its Oysterflex bracelet, and the white-gold version became the 116519LN4,29,30. Its leather-strap predecessor, the 116519, had been made from 2000 to about 20156,31.

The current Daytona, since 2023

At the end of March 2023 Rolex renewed the whole range. The steel model became the 126500LN, with calibre 4131 and its Chronergy escapement, and the ceramic bezel gained an edge in the metal of the case4,18,22. The lugs became symmetrical, the counter rings slimmer, and a small crown below 6 o'clock marks the new calibre22,32.

The platinum version has a sapphire case back; the steel one does not18,22,32. Leather has gone from the catalogue: every Daytona now comes on an Oyster bracelet or an Oysterflex18,33.

Sizes

The Daytona has measured 40 mm since 1988, and Rolex gives the same figure for the current model1,3,10. The hand-wound references were about 37 mm, give or take half a millimetre by source; see «Where the sources disagree»1,2,11,12.

Within the 40 mm era the differences are thickness and feel. Monochrome puts the 126500LN about half a millimetre thinner than the 116500LN, and aBlogtoWatch found that it wears larger, though Rolex lists both at 40 mm10,22,32,34. Rolex gives 100 metres of water resistance for both the 116520 of 2013 and today's 126500LN10,35.

What they cost

The prices here are those measured on our reference pages, with their dates. Asking prices are not sale prices.

New, Rolex listed the 126500LN at USD 16,900 in the US on 16 October 2026, up from USD 15,100 in July 202410,36.

Pre-owned, the discontinued steel models ask more. In February 2026 the median on Chrono24's first page was USD 23,346 for the 116520, leaving out Zenith 16520s and modified watches, and USD 30,405 for the 116500LN17,23. The window decides how it looks. The 116520 rose 13.9 per cent from February 2025 but 2.0 per cent from July 2024; the 116500LN rose 12.6 per cent from December 2024 but 3.1 per cent from June 202415,16,37,38. Both windows point up; only the shorter ones look like a rally.

The 116500LN has carried a steady premium over the 116520. At the three points where both pages have a snapshot within a month of each other, mid-2024, October 2025 and February 2026, the 116500LN's median asked about USD 6,500 to 7,100 more than the 116520's15,17,23,37,39,40. That is our own calculation across two pages counted in slightly different ways, so read it as a range, not a price.

Sold prices are thinner. EveryWatch records three 116520s sold at auction between 25 September and 5 October 2026 for USD 20,790 to 22,50041. The white-gold 116519 is two markets: leather-strap examples with black or slate dials asked USD 23,992 to 26,495 in 2025, while a turquoise «Beach» sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong in September 2026 for about USD 133,800 including premium, in EveryWatch's conversion42,43,44.

Which one should you buy?

If you want a steel Daytona with a steel bezel and Rolex's own movement, there is only the 116520, and pre-owned it asks less than the 116500LN5,6,17,23.

If you want ceramic and the older, pointed case, it is the 116500LN. Expect to pay for it: its median asked between 1.8 and 1.95 times the US list price of a new 126500LN at each of five snapshots from mid-2024 to February 202623,24,36,37,38,39,45,46,47,48.

If you want the newest calibre and a new watch's five-year guarantee18, it is the 126500LN at list price, if a jeweller will sell you one. We have not measured the wait. In March 2022, a year before the 126500LN, SwissWatchExpo wrote of years-long waiting lists for the steel ceramic Daytona49.

If you want gold that reads as steel from across a room, look at the white-gold 116519 on leather, and read the listing title first: Chrono24 files it with the 116519LN50,51.

If you want the original, it is a hand-wound four-digit reference. We have not measured their prices, and Monochrome warns that «Paul Newman» dials are among the most faked2. No guide, ours included, can prove a watch genuine; have it inspected before you pay.

The dubious part

For a quarter of a century the Daytona was hard to sell, and the exotic dials hardest of all1,2,12. In 2017 one of them sold for USD 17,752,500 including premium13,14. The lesson the market drew was not «buy what nobody wants». It was «join the queue».

Dates for the hand-wound references vary by a year or two between sources, and the 116500LN's relation to the 116520 is disputed; see «Where the sources disagree» below. Monochrome says screw-down pushers became permanent with the 6263 and 6265.

Questions people ask

What are the generations of the Rolex Daytona?
Four, by movement: hand-wound calibres based on the Valjoux 72 (1963 to 1987 or 1988), the Zenith-based calibre 4030 (from 1988), Rolex's own calibre 4130 (from 2000) and calibre 4131 (from 2023)1,2,3,4.
When did the Daytona become automatic?
In 1988, with the 16520 and calibre 4030, a heavily modified Zenith El Primero1,2,4.
Which was the first Daytona with a movement made by Rolex?
The 116520 and its gold and two-tone siblings, launched with calibre 4130 at Baselworld in March 20001,3,4,5.
Did the 116500LN replace the 116520?
Sources disagree. Gray & Sons, aBlogtoWatch and Luxury of Watches say so; at Baselworld 2016, SJX reported Rolex's line that it was an addition. Every source we found ends the 116520 in 20165,6,7,8,9.
What size is a Rolex Daytona?
40 mm since 19881,3,10. The hand-wound references measure about 37 mm; sources give 36 to 37.5 mm1,2,11.
What is a «Paul Newman» Daytona?
A hand-wound Daytona with what Rolex called an «exotic» dial, offered in the 1960s and 1970s3,11,12. Newman's own 6239 sold at Phillips in 2017 for USD 17,752,500 including premium13,14.
Is a Daytona a good investment?
It depends on the window. The 116520's median asking price rose 13.9 per cent from February 2025 to February 2026 but 2.0 per cent from July 202415,16,17. Asking prices are not sale prices, and we do not give investment advice.

Should you buy one? Choose the bezel first: steel, ceramic, or ceramic edged in steel. The price follows from that, and so does the wait.

Where the sources disagree

Whether the 116500LN replaced the 116520. Gray & Sons, aBlogtoWatch and Luxury of Watches say the 116500LN replaced it in 2016. At Baselworld 2016, SJX reported Rolex's line that the ceramic model was an addition and the 116520 would continue. Rolex's pages for the 116520 redirected from mid-2016, and every source we found ends production in 20165,6,7,8,9,27,28.

When the 6263 and 6265 began and ended. Monochrome and Time and Watches say they began in 1971 and Wristbuzz 1969. Wikipedia says both: «from 1970» in its text and 1971 in its table. Wikipedia and Time and Watches also report a 6263 made in 1969. Time and Watches and Robb Report end them in 1987; Monochrome, Wristbuzz and Wikipedia's table in 1988. The 6262 and 6264 vary by a year in the same way1,2,3,11,12.

When «Daytona» reached the dial. Monochrome says late 1964 and Wikipedia 1964; Time and Watches says 1965. Rolex says only that it appeared in the early years on some dials for the American market1,2,3,4.

The size of the hand-wound cases. Monochrome gives the 6239 as 36 mm, adding that many consider it 37 mm with the bezel. Wikipedia, Time and Watches and Wristbuzz say 37 mm; Robb Report gives up to 37.5 mm. We write about 37 mm1,2,3,11,12.

The 16520's last year and its Zenith base. aBlogtoWatch, Monochrome and Wikipedia end the 16520 in 2000, Mazzariol's study in 2001. Monochrome and Wristbuzz name the Zenith base calibre 400, Wikipedia 3019PHC1,2,7,12,28.
